Coleen, DJ and Laura went snorkeling at slack tide, 9:30 a.m. They came back a couple of hours later with a super excited Coleen. She had seen a peacock flounder which she thought was the coolest fish ever. She got out our reef fish book and excitedly showed me pictures of all the fish she had seen, before settling down to begin her school day.
Later Laura and I took her high speed dinghy to Moxey Town where we had a bit of a wierd experience. We happened by this little restaraunt. The owner greeted us warmly and told us all about her new business. We looked at the menu which was written on a small dry erase board. They had cracked conch for $6 with fries. I'd never tried it so we decided to order some. The lady invited us to come in and sit in her new dining room, showed us all around the place. We were the only customers. A few minutes later the waitress brought out huge plates of cracked conch with fries and potato salad, and a pitcher of lemonade. It was a lot of food. I'll have to say I'm not a huge fan of cracked conch. Basically, they pound the conch until it's thin, then bread and deep fry it. It reminded me a bit of calamari. Anyway, when we finished they brought our bill and it was $40! This was a problem, especially since I had only $10 in my pocket, besides the menu said $6. We got the owner and asked what was up. She said that since we sat in the dining room the price was higher - $15 each with $2 each for the lemonade and a $6 tip. I felt like I'd been swindled. Anyway we settled on $10 a piece and I went out of there shaking my head.
Next we spied a liquor store and went in to take a look. The huge store was nearly empty. The only thing they had for sale was gin. Several different kinds, but all gin. Wierd. We walked around for a few more minutes exploring the few stores. The stores in small Bahamian settlements rarely have signs that say what kind of store it is. There is usally just an open or closed sign with no list of hours either.
We were back on the boat by 3 p.m. I did a few chores, made a simple dinner, stuffed baked potatoes, and had a quiet evening as I was nursing a headache.
